An Ode to the Mighty Clove

Spices are often overlooked in the mixology process, but they are a crucial piece. The spice you add to a drink gives it the extra kick, that oomph you wouldn’t otherwise have, that ah-ha moment that ties all the other ingredients together. With the holidays coming up quickly, we thought we’d take you on a journey with one of our favorite holiday drink spices: the clove. Cloves offer a strong earthy kick to any drink, but hide a sweet and sometimes even creamy taste that is unparalleled in the spice world. Plus, they have hidden health benefits that help them make the drinks they sit in more holistic and unique.

Cloves come from a subtropical evergreen tree found in the Maluku islands of Indonesia, and often is used by the native people of the island for medicinal purposes. When the spice was discovered to be useful by other countries, wars were waged over its healing properties. Cloves contain certain bioactive compounds that are rich in antioxidants, and can help reduce inflammation and promote healthy digestion.

The use for cloves expands far beyond their health benefits however. Cloves are unique in their ability to pair well with a wide variety of ingredients, which is a mixologist’s dream. For example, a clove in a White Russian brings out the creamy taste of the half-and-half and the liqueur, but can also be paired well with citrus, where they accentuate the tang and the acidity of the fruit. This effective pairing makes the clove perfect for any event, from frosty winter weddings to cozy corporate holiday parties.
